Guard Cavalry represent a genus of Medium Cavalry recruitable to factions which do not train the usual Hussars and Cuirassiers of the Western world, including the United States, Sweden, Portugal, and the Dutch as well as New Spain and Peru, as well as most non-Western nations. While they are not as fast as say Hussars nor as tough as Demi-Lancers, they are still useful units as their speed allows them to take out most enemy artillery with ease.
Because Guard Cavalry is costly and can be easily outclassed, always keep them away from enemy Demi-Lancers, using polearm units as a screen to keep the Demi-Lancers at bay. If you are playing as China, however, note that you can recruit BOTH Guard Cavalry as well as Yellow Banner Cavalry, which can be used as a powerful shock force. This means that you have more flexibility in your decisions, as you can choose either the better Yellow Banner Cavalry to punish cav civs such as the Mexicans or the French, or bring in the Guard Cavalry to be used against infantry-heavy factions, particularly the early-game Germans.
- For the East Asian factions, Guard Cavalry appear wearing leather armour and a plumed kettle helm and are lance cavalry.
- This is the only unit available to Korea bar the appearance of Merchant Cavalry.
- Japan can recruit only Kibatai .
