Overall strategy[]

While it may not be as strong as any Ship of the Line, don't be fooled: the Victory-class Battleship exemplifies the sort of sea power that Britain can host — while she sacrifices armour and attack, she gets back a more frequent rate of fire and a greater area of effect, making her a highly dangerous unit on the seas. In addition, Victory also enjoys a tweak to her cost structure with a ramp cost in Wealth, not Timber or Metal. This makes the Victory a powerful weapon in the hands of an able British player, and should be used not as a "guard" unit, but as an offensive unit in her own right. Protect her on both wings from enemy fire vessels — especially the dreaded Dutch Hellebrander — and the Victory will serve you well, especially in using her awesom offensive power to turn enemy ships into toothpicks, and the tars therein into mincemeat.

History[]

HMS Victory is a warship of the British Royal Navy, the former flagship of Horatio Nelson, and, with over 220 years of continuous service, the last first-rate ship of the line left in commission in the world.

A three-decker ship of the line of 100 guns, built between 1759 and 1765, Victory is the only surviving warship to have fought in the American War of Independence, the French Revolutionary War and the Napoleonic Wars. Notable actions in which she participated include the Relief of Gibraltar, the Battle of Cape St Vincent and the Battle of Trafalgar. During the Battle of Trafalgar, Admiral Nelson was shot on the quarterdeck of the Victory by a French sniper. He was brought below deck where he died at the conclusion of the battle, which proved to be his greatest victory.

HMS Victory is today permanently kept in dock at Portsmouth where she attracts tens of thousands of visitors annually.
