Overall strategy[]

Guard Cavalry represent a genus of Medium Cavalry recruitable to factions which do not train the usual Hussars and Cuirassiers of the Western world, including the United States, Sweden, Portugal, and the Dutch as well as New Spain and Peru, as well as most non-Western nations. While not as tough as Demi-Lancers, they are still useful units as their speed allows them to take out most enemy artillery with ease.

Because Guard Cavalry is costly and can be easily outclassed, always keep them away from enemy Demi-Lancers, using polearm units as a screen to keep the Demi-Lancers at bay.

Unit summary[]

  • Early game medium cavalry, ideal for amassing shock power.
  • As medium cavalry go, Guard Cavalry are not that specialised as light or heavy cavalry, but still fast enough to function as a fast moving unit.
  • China is capable of deploying Guard Cavalry alongside other more specialised cavalry units, granting the Chinese player an unrivalled early cavalry edge with regards to cost and strategy.

Notes[]

Depending on your faction, Guard Cavalry have two distinct appearances.

  • For the East Asian factions, Guard Cavalry appear wearing leather armour and a plumed kettle helm and are lance cavalry.
  • For most Southeast Asian factions, Guard Cavalry are based off the African cuirassier unit.
  • This is the only unit available to Korea bar the appearance of Merchant Cavalry.
  • Japan can recruit only Kibatai .

There are 2 versions of Guard Cavalry:

  • The first one evolves into Cuirassiers (Dutch, Swedes, Portuguese)
  • The second one remains in the game, and will not evolve until new units are researched. Such units are the following:
    • Mexico: Permanentes
    • Americans: Texan Lancers
    • Peru: Montoneras.
    • China: Beiyang Cavalry
    • Koreans, Thai, Bamar, Malays are permanently stuck with this unit well until the end of the game!
