They were German hussars and they streamed out of the dunes leaving a trail of dust, their drawn blades glittering.

History[]
Following the fall of the German Kingdom of Hannover to Napoleon in 1803, the Hannoverian army was disbanded, resulting in a mass of trained troops which was soon exploited by Britain, who by now was gearing for war with France (and whose king George IV was a distant relative of the Hannoverian royal family). Four thousand Hanoverians were recruited, both back in Britain and on the Continent, and reorganised as the King's German Legion. By 1805 it consisted of two cavalry brigades, a light infantry brigade, two line infantry brigades and its own artillery and engineering units. By 1808 the Legion had been fully incorporated into the British army and had abandoned its own training and language of command. The Legion was considered to be a crack unit which served with distinction, and when it was disbanded in 1816, some of the Legion's men and officers were subsequently absorbed into the armies of the now restored Hannoverian kingdom.
